Portugal secured their place in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals by defeating Slovenia in an exciting penalty shootout.

The first-ever penalties shootout in this summer’s competition took place in the last-16 match between Portugal and Slovenia following a goalless 90 minutes and extra time.

When he tucked in his shootout spot-kick, he seemed to apologise to the Portuguese supporters for his previous error.

And Portugal advanced to the next round of the Euros with a 3-0 shootout victory.

Portugal’s first penalty kick was converted by Cristiano Ronaldo, who erred in his extra-time conversion. Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United and Bernardo Silva of Manchester City both scored their penalties.

After missing a penalty kick in extra time, Ronaldo made amends to the Portuguese supporters and went on to score his spot-kick in the shootout, demonstrating his top mindset.

The 39-year-old recognised his mistake in extra time by raising his hands and gesturing to the supporters behind the goal as soon as he placed his penalty past Jan Oblak.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was devastated when Oblak saved his first penalty of the match, but the legendary forward was grinning as Portugal moved on to the next round.

In the Euro 2024 semifinals, Roberto Martinez’s squad will take on Didier Deschamps’ France on Friday.
