Mason Greenwood put on a respectable display, but he could not prevent Getafe from losing away to Osasuna in the struggle for a mid-table spot.
In La Liga, Getafe is presently ranked tenth, four points ahead of Osasuna in eleventh position. Despite their struggles with consistency in performances and outcomes this season, both teams came together to play a thrilling match earlier today.
Although the Manchester United loanee seemed to be settling in well, there was a problem with his most recent match that will undoubtedly have damaged him. This occurred in a thrilling five-goal match versus Osasuna.
The chants were absent from this tie, but the crowd booed Greenwood loudly each time he got the ball.
The United loanee “caught the eye” with several risky passes and strong ball dribbles. But his efforts were insufficient to change the outcome.
Given a starting spot in an unfamiliar left-wing role, Greenwood occasionally looked irritated as Getafe struggled to turn their superior possession domination into meaningful opportunities. One of the infrequent opportunities his team could muster was lost on him.
Greenwood had 3 shots with accuracy, 16/27 accurate passes, and 2/4 successful dribbles during this game. The Man Utd loanee has won 4/8 duels and made three recoveries on defense.
Two goals in quick succession from Osasuna in the first half put them behind early. Raul Garcia’s (9th minute) and Iker Munoz’s (31st minute) strikes gave their team a comfortable lead going into the half.
Greenwood’s adopted side then pulled off an almost unforgettable comeback in the second half.
Getafe equalized by two quick goals from Nemanja Maksimovic (68th minute) and Borja Mayoral (64th minute). During this time, Greenwood was a worry for the opposition since he put a lot of efforts on goal and was often finding teammates with deft passes.
Mason Greenwood’s left-footed attempt from the center of the box is stopped in the center of the goal at the 43-minute mark.
Mason Greenwood’s right-footed effort from the right side of the box is saved in the goal’s center at the 57-minute mark. With help from José Ángel Carmona.
But Getafe’s rally was cut short in the 80th minute by an absurd goal by Jesus Areso.
The Osasuna defender made his debut in the match as a substitute, but not before scoring a goal from an almost impossible angle.
Although it was clearly a mishit cross, supporters of the La Liga team this year referred to it on social media as “one of the goals of the season.”
Whatever Areso’s motivation, his effort was sufficient to secure Osasuna’s three points and condemn Greenwood’s team to their second straight league loss. Getafe is now one point ahead of its rivals in the league after the setback.
Even though it wasn’t Greenwood’s best performance while wearing a Getafe shirt, the 22-year-old showed enough in a short amount of time to show why the biggest teams in Spain have been keeping a close eye on him in anticipation of a possible summer transfer.
Next week, when Getafe hosts nineteenth-place Granada at the Estadio Coliseum, the United loanee will have the opportunity to help his team make up for this setback.
