Manchester United was two goals down against an Aston Villa team that had never lost after being ahead this season. Not many people would have given them a chance.
But Erik ten Hag’s team came back from behind to win 3-2 and keep up their great Boxing Day record. They are now perfect in 20 games at Old Trafford on this day.
Most of the credit should go to Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and Marcus Rashford for their work in attack, but Jonny Evans’ play at the back was also very good.
What a turnoff from Evans
Unai Emery’s team had a chance to score their third goal when John McGinn deflected the ball into the goal while Andre Onana was not paying attention.
But the Northern Irishman made a key block on the goal line to keep the score even after the Red Devils had done so well to get back into the game.
At that very time, it was a very important play that would have broken the team if it had gone against them after all the work they put into ending the curse in front of the goal.
That clearance gave the team a confidence boost, and the young Dane then scored the game-winning goal.
The 35-year-old defender was great, blocking three shots that were headed for the goal, clearing the ball once, and making that important last-ditch save (all stats from Sofascore).
He also picked off four passes and won all three of his overhead battles, leaving Ollie Watkins with very little to do that night.
Not a good deal
The young player from the school was calm when he had the ball and always made the right pass, even when Villa put pressure on him.
