In the opening game of the Copa America in Atlanta on Thursday, defending champions Argentina defeated Canada 2-0. Goals in the second half from forwards Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez cemented the victory.
In the first half, Canada used their precise pressing to create a few opportunities, but Argentina’s Angel di Maria missed a great chance to score after making a driving run from his own half.
Four minutes into the second half, Lionel Messi’s brilliant ball to Alexis Mac Allister, who pushed it past the charging Maxime Crepeau in the goal for Canada, set up an easy finish for Alvarez, giving Lionel Scaloni’s team the lead.
After falling down, Canada made a strong charge, but Argentina’s experienced centre back Nicolas Otamendi provided much-needed security at the back. In the 88th minute, Martinez, a replacement, scored after a feed from Messi to seal the victory.
