On Sunday, Manchester United beat West Ham United 3-0 at Old Trafford in the Premier League. Diogo Dalot played very well in defense.
The star Portuguese back has been one of the club’s most reliable this season, and he was great in the recent win over West Ham.
About 90% of the passes Dalot made went through, and he finished 52 of them. Eight of the nine long balls he threw were hit, giving him an 89% success rate.
As an inverted right back, the 24-year-old was caught out of position a few times, but he made up for it with a key block that stopped Jarrod Bowen from scoring.
The player who used to play for Porto saved Harry Maguire’s face by stopping Bowen’s shot, which would have tied the game (2-0 at the time).
Aaron Wan-Bissaka was Ten Hag’s first choice right back, but Dalot has been better because he is better at striking. He has also gotten better at defense.
He has been able to focus and place himself better, and he is now ahead of Wan-Bissaka in the rankings. He might be the long-term answer, but only time will tell.
United’s win over West Ham has cut the gap to the top four teams to eight points. The gap could be cut even more during the game at Aston Villa next Sunday.
Villa is in fourth place in the league right now. If Manchester United can beat the Midlands team twice, they could be in the running for the Champions League.
It’s a must-win game for them because a loss would make the difference 11 points.
