After Ryan Gravenberch was carted off the pitch due to an ankle injury sustained during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final victory against Chelsea, Andy Robertson chastised Moises Caicedo for his “incredibly poor tackle”.
In a thrilling finish, Virgil van Dijk’s goal in the 28th minute of extra time gave Liverpool their tenth League Cup and preserved their chances of winning a historic quadruple in manager Jurgen Klopp’s last campaign.
The 64th League Cup final at Wembley was full of high drama and controversy, with goals disallowed for offside in normal time for Raheem Sterling and Van Dijk.
Although Gravenberch’s injury in the first half took away some of the victory’s lustre, an ecstatic Klopp celebrated in style as he won the Reds’ ninth trophy.
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged Gravenberch had suffered ankle ligament damage in his post-match interview with Sky Sports. The midfielder from the Netherlands was seen using crutches following the game.
“The referee did not have the level of the game,” Klopp said to Sky Sports, referring to two teams that were engaged in intense fighting.
“I apologise; that’s the way it is. I know you’ll fabricate a tale, but everyone witnessed that.”
“There was no foul at all!” He didn’t even give a foul whistle! The fourth official then tells me that they are unable to provide a card. Oh, that’s a wise concept!
I’m not sure if this is too much, too fast, or something else for these lads, but it seemed clear to me what was going on. We witnessed a Chelsea player stamping his ankle; that’s all you need for a card.
“Hopefully, it won’t be too bad. The X-ray showed that it’s not broken, but the ligaments have some damage, so that’s the situation.” Although everything else is excellent, this is all terrible.
Similar to how he felt about Caicedo’s challenge, Liverpool defender Robertson told Sky Sports that he had his “fingers crossed” for his teammate.
Ryan’s injury is the result of a really poor tackle. There’s no other way to paint,’ the Scotland full-back remarked.
“You just have to hope that the pain he was experiencing on the pitch isn’t as bad as the really bad tackle that happened to his ankle.”
Fingers crossed for that one, and hopefully, slowly but surely, we get the boys back since things are becoming worse right now and we need to continue in the current direction.
However, ideally, we’ll begin adding players back to the team and develop stronger and stronger.
Then, ideally, we’ll return to a fully healthy group quickly enough to really push through to the finish of the season.
