There will be no more international games for Antoine Griezmann with France after ten years.
The 33-year-old forward for Atletico Madrid made the announcement on Instagram on Monday.
In a video, he said, “I close this part of my life with a heart full of memories.” Thank you for this wonderful trip through the three colors, and I’ll see you soon.
“It’s time for me to move on and make room for the next generation after 10 amazing years full of challenges, successes, and moments I will never forget.”
“It was an honor and a privilege to wear this jersey.”
Griezmann played his first game for France against the Netherlands in March 2014 and went on to score 44 goals in 137 games for Les Bleus.
Griezmann has scored more goals for France than any other player in the team’s history. Olivier Giroud (57), Thierry Henry (51), and Kylian Mbappe (48) are the others.
Hugo Lloris (145 caps) and Lilian Thuram (142 caps) are the only players with more caps for France. Giroud and Griezmann are tied for 137 games each.
Griezmann scored in France’s 4-2 win over Croatia in the 2018 FIFA World Cup final, which was their first title.
Besides that, he played in the 2022 final, which France lost to Argentina in a shootout.
Griezmann got the Golden Boot at Euro 2016, but France lost to Portugal 1-0 in the final.
He did, however, win a European title in 2021 when France won the UEFA Nations League Finals.
Griezmann last played for France earlier this month, in a 2-0 Nations League win over Belgium. He came off the bench for that game.
France’s first game since Griezmann left will be on October 10 against Israel. Israel will play that game at home, but it will be held in Budapest, Hungary.
