Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, said it was wrong for fans to throw things at Thibaut Courtois, the custodian for Real Madrid, but he also said Courtois was to blame for stirring up the crowd.
After Eder Militao put the tourists ahead just after the hour mark at the Metropolitano Stadium, Courtois celebrated with the Atletico fans.
The fans were very angry at Courtois and threw things at him, like lighters and a plastic bag.
Because of this, judge Mateo Busquets stopped the game and made both teams leave the field.
To try to cool down the Atletico fans, Simeone and a few of his players, like captain Koke and Jose Maria Gimenez, told them to behave themselves.
Angel Correa scored a dramatic late equaliser that was initially called out but later overturned by VAR, which made the home fans happy. The game ended 1-1.
But there’s no denying that the event involving Courtois cast a shadow over the competition.
After the game, Simeone said that everyone needed to work together to make sure that something like this didn’t happen again.
He told DAZN, “We all have to help.”
“People get angry when we make them angry.” You can enjoy a goal, but not by making fun of the fans in the stands and staring at them.
“It wasn’t right, but neither was what happened next.”
Koke told DAZN, “It was a tense moment.” On a sports pitch, though, this is not allowed.
“We have to be smart and know where we are because we’re professionals. The other things can’t happen.”
People who play have to be smart. The rules said that the match would be over if the problem happened again.
Both teams kept their perfect start to the 2024–25 LaLiga season. Real Madrid is in second place with 18 points, and Atletico Madrid is in third place with 16 points.
Spain’s top league is led by Barcelona, who has 21 points after eight games. However, they lost to Osasuna 4–2 on Saturday, which was their first loss of the season.
