Reports say that both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid want to sign Mason Greenwood this summer, even though he doesn’t play for Manchester United anymore.
Greenwood, 22, is on loan at Getafe right now after being released by United last summer, just seven months after charges of attempted rape and attack were dropped against him.
He has had a good start at Getafe, hitting five goals and setting up five others in 21 La Liga games. He may decide to stay in Spain after this season is over.
German news source Sport1 via Mundo Deportivo says that Barcelona and Atletico are planning to compete for his signature in the coming months. Mail Sport has learned that Atletico are particularly interested in signing him.
The price United is asking for Greenwood is €40m (£34m). Anyone who wants to buy him should do so.
Greenwood is under contract at Old Trafford until June 2025. This summer is United’s last chance to get a good price for him.
Getafe wants to keep Greenwood on loan for another year, but they can’t pay his £75,000-a-week wages.
Greenwood has mostly played well since coming to Getafe. He recently scored a penalty with his weaker right foot against Real Betis.
Fans also called him a “generational” talent after he played a big role in his team’s tie with Villarreal last Friday.
An embarrassing insult was said to have been directed at Greenwood by England star Jude Bellingham during a game earlier this month against Real Madrid. This caused a lot of debate.
Some fans thought they heard Bellingham calling Greenwood a “rapist,” which was a reference to the charges that were first made against him in January 2022 and then dropped 13 months later.
Getafe told LaLiga about what happened, and they are now looking into it.
Someone who can read lips has been asked to help them decide if the case needs to go any further. If it turns out that Bellingham insulted Greenwood, he could be banned.
