Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the custodian and vice-captain of Barcelona, said that he and past Sporting Director and goalkeeping legend Andoni Zubizarreta talked about hitting milestones as the number one a decade ago. He played 400 games for Barcelona on Friday night against Real Mallorca.

At the age of 22, Ter Stegen moved from Borussia Moenchengladbach to Barcelona for €12 million in 2014. He is now the second-longest serving player at the club, after Sergi Roberto.

“When Zubi signed me ten years ago, we talked about all of this. I hope there are many more games than 400, and I’m proud to wear this shirt.”

Another thing he talked about was how Barcelona had gone three games without giving up a goal. He also praised Xavi Hernandez for playing Andreas Christensen in the middle, which has helped stop goals from flying past ter Stegen. When they play Napoli on Tuesday night, they will want to keep a clean sheet.

“Putting Christensen in midfield makes our defense and attack lines more balanced. Xavi made the choice, and it’s good for us. He looks calm and confident, even though he wasn’t totally at ease in his new role at first.”

This season, Ter Stegen missed a string of games for the second time in his ten years with the club. He had back surgery in December. Ter Stegen said that he tried to learn something from the experience. He also talked about his backup goalie, Inaki Pena, whose saves were very important in the last two games of the group stage.

“Being away for a long time was hard, but it taught me a lot. If you look at it that way, you come back with a little more.” That was the choice we had to make. It was hard for me to get my feelings back in the first game. As for Inaki, he did a great job. Iñaki had a tough job, but I think he did a great job. He played two Champions games, and we’re here in part because of him. This isn’t just about one player, it’s about all of us.
