BEHIND THE SCENE: Pep Guardiola and Man City quartet Walker, Rodri, Foden, Haaland beam as earn PFA honour

Four Manchester City players have been named in the 2023/24 Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Premier League Team of the Year.

Kyle Walker, Rodrigo, Phil Foden and Erling Haaland were all selected for the prestigious annual eleven, voted for by their fellow professionals.

The quartet all made huge individual contributions in what proved another outstanding season of success with City securing a historic fourth straight Premier League title as well also lifting both the UEFA Super Club and FIFA Club World Cup.

For both Rodrigo and Haaland, it is the second successive season that they have been recognised by their peers in such a way.

Spanish holding midfielder Rodrigo enjoyed arguably his finest season at City yet with his combination of silk and steel alongside power and panache dovetailing to hugely impressive fashion once more.

He made 50 appearances across all competitions weighing in with nine goals – his highest individual tally since joining City from Atletico Madrid in 2019.

And the fact he has now gone 50 Premier League games unbeaten with City only further illustrates his importance to the cause of Pep Guardiola’s side.

For Haaland too, the 2023/24 campaign was another to both savour and celebrate after his astonishing exploits in his maiden Etihad campaign.

Despite being sidelined for two months in the winter with a foot issue, the Norwegian master marksman conjured up an astonishing 38 goals from 45 appearances – 27 coming in the Premier League alone to earn him a second successive Golden Boot prize.

Along the way Haaland also became the quickest player in Premier League history to register 50 goals, as well as being the youngest and fastest to reach the 40-goal career tally in the UEFA Champions League.

Walker’s inclusion comes after what by any measure was an exemplary season by the experienced England right back.

A totem of our iconic Treble winning campaign of 2022/23, Walker was subsequently elected as Club captain ahead of the onset of the 2023/24 season.

And his impact, influence, hunger and desire allied to his wealth of elite experience proved instrumental in helping City rewrite the history books once again as we become the first men’s side in English history to claim four successive titles.

Man City defender Kyle Walker had fans questioning his choice of suit and sneakers

At the age of 34 Walker’s fitness and physicality remain supreme, with the skipper clocking up 47 appearances in his seventh campaign as a City player – his most since the 2018/19 season – with his 32 Premier League matches also representing his best tally for five years.

Last but by no means least, Foden’s inclusion in the PFA team further cemented what by common consent was the finest season of his glittering career to date.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder was at the heart of so much that was good about Guardiola’s side, enjoying a stellar campaign that illustrated his standing as one of the most exciting and creative English players of his generation.

In the 2023–24 season, Foden played in 53 games, 48 of which he started, and recorded another personal best of 12 assists and 27 goals. This was his most games played in a season.

Amazingly, he has already won 17 major trophies during his time with City, and few would wager on him continuing to win many more in the future.

Everyone at Manchester City would like to congratulate Rodrigo, Erling, Kyle and Phil on their inclusion.
