Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has downplayed the on-field spat between teammates Rasmus Hojlund and Amad Diallo following Thursday night’s 2-1 comeback victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.
.
After recent defeats to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, compounded by the shock exit of sporting director Dan Ashworth, the win lifted the team’s spirits. Although Andre Onana’s mistake allowed Matej Vydra to put Plzen ahead early in the second half, Hojlund quickly leveled and then scored the winner just two minutes from time, marking Amorim’s first away win as United boss.
Despite his success, Hojlund expressed frustration at not being able to complete a hat-trick after Diallo chose to go alone rather than pass during a late break. This led to a heated exchange between the two players at the final whistle.
.
Amorim viewed the incident positively, stating, “Yes, I was aware of that, and for me it’s perfect. In this moment, we need to feel something. If we need to fight each other, it’s like a family. For me, it’s a very, very good sign.”
He emphasized that such emotions show the players care, saying, “When you care, you fight with your brother, father, and mother. It’s a normal thing. I think it’s a positive thing, a healthy thing.”
Thursday’s victory was crucial for United’s chances of advancing to the Europa League knockout phase and improving their league position, as they aim to finish in the top eight to avoid the play-off round. Amorim noted the importance of resilience, saying, “It was important not to give up. … I am happy that we won the game and still fight each other. That is a very good thing.”
As they prepare for a crucial match against Manchester City rivals, Amorim focuses on building the team in his image and fostering a competitive spirit among the players.
