Following his red card at Newcastle, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was given an additional one-match suspension and a fine of £100,000 after acknowledging his wrong behavior.
On August 27, during Liverpool’s 2-1 victory against St. James’ Park, Van Dijk was sent off for a foul on Alexander Isak. Despite initially refusing to leave the field, he later argued with referee John Brooks.
The center-back served an obligatory one-match suspension for missing the 3-0 victory over Aston Villa prior to the international break; however, he will now also serve a second suspension and miss the trip to Wolves on September 16.
According to a statement from the Football Association, Virgil van Dijk violated FA Rule E3.1 during Liverpool’s encounter against Newcastle and received a one-game suspension and a £100,000 fine.
