The fact that Erik TEN HAG’s team was denied a second goal made him shake his head in disbelief.
Even so, Ten Hag was very angry when Joao Pedro scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute. His team had completely given up.
Pedro was not even marked when he headed in a dramatic winner from Simon Adingra’s cross.
What a great start for Fabian Hurzeler, the 31-year-old boss of Brighton whose team beat Everton a week ago.
He did the right thing by telling his team to keep going instead of giving up for a point at the end.
Danny Welbeck, a former United striker, scored the first goal, but Amad Diallo scored to tie the game.
Still, United had a terrible day, and the goal that never was in the 70th minute was the major topic of conversation.
United beat Fulham late in the first Premier League game of the season thanks to goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho.
It looked like Garnacho had made it 2-1, but his shot hit the knee of Zirkzee, the new scorer who cost £36 million, who was on the line.
Zirkzee was already on his behind because he tried to turn in Bruno Fernandes’s cross before it got to Garnacho, who had only been on the game for five minutes.
Not even Zirkzee could stop the ball, and even though it looked like it was going in (almost over the line), VAR had to rule it out because the linesman didn’t raise his flag.
Ten Hag stuck with the same starting eleven that beat Fulham eight days before and also kept the same bench of substitutes, which meant that Jadon Sancho could not play.
Still, Diallo should have put United ahead right away, but after a great cross from Diogo Dalot, he volleyed a shot from close range wide. He didn’t have much time to think, but if he had tried a diving shot, he would have scored for sure.
Casemiro was unguarded when Diallo took a free kick and sent a header over the bar. He then said that the ball should have been sent further forward so he could run on it. But if he had scored, he might have been called offside.
Marcus Rashford had a terrible game and was later replaced. It was his pass to Fernandes that gave Brighton the lead, which he hit too hard.
The first pass from Joao Pedro was not cleared by United’s defenders. Kaoru Mitoma slid the ball back across the goal, and Welbeck stuck out his leg to score.
Harry Maguire should have been smarter and cut out the first cross, even though it meant he might have let the ball go into his own goal.
