Frenkie de Jong, a talented player for Barcelona, has long been associated with Manchester United. It is excellent news for United that sources now indicate Paris Saint-Germain has lost interest in signing him.
Barcelona may have to sell some of its greatest players this summer due to their financial difficulties. De Jong might be among them. This season, the midfield player has made 29 appearances for Barcelona, and reports out of Spain indicate that other teams are interested in signing him.
Sport claims that De Jong is liked by Bayern Munich and PSG alike. According to the source, PSG is “deeply engaged in a battle to clean up its accounts” in order to comply with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations, thus they have given up on trying to recruit the Dutch player this summer.
The sale of Kylian Mbappe will free up a lot of money, and according to the story, PSG is focused on replacing him with Napoli star Victor Osimhen. As a result, they won’t be able to meet Barcelona’s asking price of at least €80 million (£69 million).
So, Bayern has “come into play” as a possible choice for De Jong as the German giants try to rebuild after losing the Bundesliga title for the first time since 2012 to Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso.
United could also join the race. They have been interested in De Jong since Erik ten Hag’s first summer in charge. It looked like a deal was almost done for Manchester United, but De Jong turned down the offer to move to Old Trafford because he wanted to stay in Spain.
De Jong told NOS last year, “Manchester United already talked with Barcelona [in 2022], even though I wanted to stay here.” This is why the move to Old Trafford did not happen.
“The club was having a rough time. They could sell me for a lot of money, but I didn’t want to go, so I stayed. The longer I can stay here, the better. If everything goes well for me and the club, that is.
“I’ve won the league here, so the only thing left to win this season is the Nations League with the Netherlands.” Even though it’s not the Euros or the World Cup, I think it would be good for us to win.
