In our latest “A Day With…” video feature, Cody Gakpo talks candidly about his upbringing in Merseyside, his footballing idols, his family history, and a host of other topics.
We recently spent a day with the forward for Liverpool to learn more about his adjustment to his new life after joining the team in January.
Presenter Rubi Deschamps takes Gakpo on a tour of his routines while he travels to training. We get a close-up look at his interactions at the AXA Training Center and learn about the moniker one of his teammates has given him.
After that, the Dutchman goes to the city’s Baltic Triangle, where he talks about how much Reds fans have influenced him and how much he wants to win a title here.
“When you play home or away, you always hear them, you always feel the support they give – always positive as well,” the No.18 says. “That’s why you’re going to go the next step, a little bit further, you want to fight for them as well. It’s together.”
He adds of his growing affection for his new home: “Yeah, I was on vacation and everything, back home in the Netherlands and at one point I started missing to be here, because I really like it here.
“When you play at a club like Liverpool, I never won a prize now here but I can imagine it feels slightly different than with other clubs.”
Recalling his love of football as a child, Gakpo also talks about his father’s guidance as he began his professional career in Eindhoven.
“Everyone in the city wanted to be Afellay because he played for PSV and then for Barcelona, and where I’m from, of course, we all support PSV,” he says.
“Then there was Messi, Ronaldo, and all those famous people.” They were all sources of motivation.

My dad gave me a lot of training when I first started playing football. He would constantly show me clips of Maradona and Pele since they were his childhood heroes. I met them in the same way; they’re all quite intelligent.
