The Ukrainian international’s contract had one year left, so he was expected to stay with the team during the summer transfer window. According to a previous story from The Athletic, he was also close to signing a new deal.

Prior to the conclusion of the previous campaign, Madrid and Lunin verbally agreed on a new contract.

The 25-year-old was hesitant to stay longer with the Spanish team, though, because of Courtois’ significance and the potential loss of playing time that would follow.

With a deal that ran through 2024, Lunin left FC Zorya Luhansk to join Madrid in 2018. He extended in 2019 through 2025, despite the club did not formally announce the agreement. He replaced Thibaut Courtois as Real Madrid’s starting custodian during the 2023–2024 campaign when the latter had a knee ligament injury in August of 2023.

That season, he made 31 appearances across all competitions, recording 12 clean sheets and contributing to his team’s La Liga and Champions League victories.

This season, in all five of Madrid’s games, he has not been utilised as a replacement.
