A crazy return by Copenhagen to beat Manchester United 4-3 on Wednesday night put them at the bottom of their Champions League group.
United was playing great in the first half, and Rasmus Hojlund scored twice to put them ahead 2-0 against his old team.
Things went badly at the end of the half, though. Marcus Rashford was sent off for a rough move on Elias Jelert, which hit the Dane on the ankle. After a VAR review, Rashford was given his second red card of the season.
Copenhagen took advantage of their lead and scored twice through Mohamed Elyounoussi and Diogo Goncalves. Goncalves scored a penalty kick in the ninth minute of extra time in the first half after Harry Maguire was called for a handball. United got their own penalty kick after Maguire’s cross hit Lukas Lerager’s raised arm in the area. A red card was given to United.
United took the lead again with a powerful penalty kick from Bruno Fernandes, but just when it looked like United would win, Lerager scored an equalizer at the far post. Diogo Dalot was caught sleeping, and Lerager made a lot of money off of it.
Three minutes before the end of the game, Roony Bardghji, a replacement for Copenhagen and the team’s top scorer, scored the game-winning goal. He is only 17 years old. This was a famous win for Denmark in Europe.
United has now lost nine of their seventeen games this season across all divisions. Erik ten Hag is under more and more pressure.
Right now, the Red Devils are in fourth place in Group A with three points. They will have to work hard to make it to the round of 16.
Rashford will not be able to go with them to Istanbul to play Galatasaray in a must-win game on November 29. Their last game of the season is on December 12 against Bayern Munich, who won their group.
