LEGENDS SPEAK UP: Cristiano Ronaldo scores double for perfect Portugal on comeback day; Bruno Fernandes (MOTM) had 90 touches of the ball and created 6 opportunities; Dalot plays 90 ‘quiet’ minutes

Portugal beat the Republic of Ireland 3-0 on Tuesday in their last game before the Euro 2024 tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals to help Portugal win easily.

One of Roberto Martinez’s team’s goals helped them get over last week’s loss to Croatia and feel better about the event in Germany.

Ronaldo, who is 39 years old, sat on the bench for that game but played against Ireland in Aveiro. He almost scored in the first half but the home team was dominated in the second.

Veteran defender Pepe, who is 41 years old, also started. He will be the oldest player to ever play in the Euros.

Winners of Euro 2016 Even though Portugal qualified with a perfect record, recent games had caused some questions to appear.

“The Portuguese expect a lot from Portugal, there is no margin for error, none, they always want Portugal to win because of the generation, the talent there is,” he said.

“We have to have our feet on the ground and our thoughts in the sky, dreaming of the Euros.”

Ronaldo will play in a record-setting sixth event. He played in his first one in 2004.

“Going back to 2004… my thoughts and my pride remain the same,” he said.

“There is nothing better than playing for the Portuguese national team.”

“For the Euros we have to think positively, this team has to dream and has been working hard, because just having talent is no use if there is no hard work.”

Felix broke the tie in the 18th minute with a well-placed goal after a short corner.

Ronaldo almost made it two, but his free kick hit the post after being blocked.

After tripping under pressure, the Al-Nassr striker asked for a penalty and then, near the end of the first half, shot a good chance straight at Caoimhin Kelleher.

Ronaldo scored right away after the break with a beautiful shot that curled into the top corner. He did not have to wait long.

The ex-Real Madrid striker quickly scored another after Diogo Jota found him in a good spot in the area.

Ronaldo scored his 130th international goal with another calm finish, breaking the old record.

Ireland, who was playing with new coach John O’Shea, was getting tired, but Portugal could not add to their lead. The striker missed a chance to score his third goal by a hair’s breadth.

“The game against Croatia served to bring us down a peg and today we did a great job, it is about following this line,” he said.

“We have 100 percent confidence on the way to Germany.”

Euro 2024 starts on Friday, and Portugal’s first game is on June 18 against the Czech Republic. They then play Turkey and Georgia in Group F.
