After being substituted due to an injury during Sunday’s La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona midfielder Pedri broke down in tears.

The 21-year-old, who missed three weeks of activity at the beginning of the year, just recently made a full recovery from his injuries, and it now appears that he will lose another significant amount of time.

The Spaniard slumped in a chair in the Barcelona dugout, had tears streaked across his face as teammates tried to cheer him up.

Pedri has had a difficult season for the Catalan club due to muscular issues; this is his third of the year. In August, he lost two months due to a hamstring strain.

Just before the break, the gifted box-to-box midfielder suffered another injury when he attempted to tackle the Bilbao winger and was clipped by Inaki Williams.

His left foot seemed to give way, causing him to fall on his own. Barcelona manager Xavi promptly substituted 16-year-old Lamine Yamal for him.

With his latest injury, Pedri joins an increasing list of midfield absentees ahead of a critical Champions League last-16 match. Pedri looked saddened in the technical area.

When Frenkie de Jong left the game in the 26th minute while being carried out on a stretcher, things had already appeared dire for the Spanish powerhouses.

Manchester United has been eyeing the Dutchman for some time. He landed awkwardly on his ankle and had to be helped off the pitch by medical personnel at the San Mames stadium. 

Having missed two months of the season due to a sprained ankle, there were obvious worries that he would now have to sit out another extended period.

The Barcelona manager, Xavi, provided an update on the players’ conditions following the game, saying, “Pedri and de Jong’s injuries do not look good, unfortunately.” It appears to be serious. We are upset because it appears they won’t be back for a while. 

The most recent injury reports arrive just as Barcelona is getting ready to meet Napoli in a Champions League quarterfinal match.
