Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has been criticized by Cristiano Ronaldo for how he has acted since taking over the club.
Ronaldo talked about his feelings in a huge interview with Rio Ferdinand that comes out tomorrow. He is a legend at Old Trafford after hitting 145 goals in 326 games over two spells and winning nine trophies with the club.
But after a fight with Ten Hag, his second stint came to an unhappy end. Ronaldo stopped his contract and then attacked Ten Hag, saying he felt “betrayed” by him.
And on the Rio Ferdinand Presents show, the Al-Nassr star got even meaner with Ten Hag and said some very harsh things about how he runs United.
“Like I told you, Manchester, I think they need to rebuild everything,” he said.
“The coach, they say they can’t compete to win the League and the Champions League.”
“As coach of Manchester United, you can’t say you’re not going to try to win the League or the Champions League.”
“You have to be able to say in your head, “Listen, maybe we don’t have that ability,” but I can’t. We’re likely to try. You need to make an effort.
United has finished third and eighth in the Premier League since Ten Hag took over, but they have won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup during that time. The Dutch manager often talks about how many trophies he has won in English football.
Things have not been going smoothly, though. United’s eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season was their worst ever, and they also lost in the group stage of the Champions League.
There was a lot of talk about Ten Hag’s future in the summer, but the football organization run by INEOS chose to keep him.
Then, he got more help from the transfer market and his teaching staff. For example, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy joined the team.
The Dutchman, who had scored 150 goals in 219 games for the club, was hired, and Ronaldo thought it was a good move. However, he made a subtle dig at Ten Hag in the process.
He said, “Ten Hag might be able to help himself if he listens to Ruud.” Because he knows the club, I think it will help a lot. The club should pay attention to the guys who were there.
“Whether it’s you [Rio], Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, or someone else, Sir Alex Ferguson,” You can’t rebuild a club without knowing what you’re doing. Not guys who work in an office. They get it.
“It was 99 percent of people who were in the locker room who understood football.” They know how to deal with the players. People are the ones who get these things.
“Because he was in the club, I think Ruud will be able to help.” He knows the club. He knows the people. The club can get better if the boss pays attention to him.
Even though there were hints of hope, Ronaldo reiterated his belief that United, who have not won the Premier League in 11 years, still have a long way to go before they can get back to the top. The 39-year-old was very critical of the club in a shocking interview with Piers Morgan before he left in 2022.
During his conversation with Morgan, Ronaldo criticized the club’s infrastructure for not making any progress. Things have gotten better since Dan Ashworth, Omar Berrada, and Jason Wilcox were hired to lead the new football structure after Sir Jim Ratcliffe took over some of the club last year.
‘This club needs time to rebuild because it’s still one of the best in the world, but they need to change,’ he said. They know that. This is the only way.
Because of this, they start to change everything again: the president, the structure of the club, and everything else. The people who own the club.
“They’re putting money into the training ground…”I’m glad things are changing because it makes me happy. Unfortunately, I’m not pleased with how things turned out; however, we can’t always change the outcomes of our lives. It’s now over.
