Cristiano Ronaldo has said when he will stop playing for his country’s team.
Since the 39-year-old’s hard Euro 2024 season with Portugal and the fact that he will be 40 in February, his future has been unclear.
Since his first game for Portugal in 2003, Ronaldo has had an amazing career. He currently holds the world record for most international goals scored, with 130.
He has been called up to Roberto Martinez’s team again for the Nations League games against Croatia and Scotland coming up.
The legendary player for Real Madrid also says he will quit international football when he thinks he can’t make a difference to anyone else.
He said, “When the time comes, I’ll move on.” There won’t be any trouble making up your mind.
“I’ll be the first to leave if I feel like I’m no longer adding anything.”
Ronaldo had said before that the summer event would be his last Euros, but he could still play for his country at the 2026 World Cup.
Ronaldo, who made his international debut in August 2003, was a regular player for Portugal even though he was getting old. He didn’t score a goal in five Euro 2024 games.
Roberto Martinez, the team’s head coach, had said earlier that no decision had been made about the striker’s future with his country after they were knocked out of the event.
In October, Ronaldo was asked when he would be leaving the national team. He said, “When I leave the national team, I won’t tell anyone in advance.”
“It will be a very quick decision for me, but one that I have given a lot of thought to.”
“Right now, I’m not thinking about coaching the first team or any other team.”
“I’ve never thought about it; it doesn’t even occur to me.” That’s not what I see for my future.
Fans may be able to see Ronaldo, a player who is 41 years old, at the World Cup in 2026 if he keeps playing.
