Dominik Szoboszlai sent the perfect response to Liverpool boss Arne Slot before he returns to Merseyside following the international break.

Hungary defeated Bosnia 2-0 with both goals scored by the midfielder. Szoboszlai scored twice before halftime to give his country their first Nations League win of the year and increase their chances of staying in League A.

The 23-year-old’s first of the night came as he supplied a composed finish in the 38th minute. Despite facing a tight angle after receiving a pass from Zsolt Nagy, Szoboszlai managed to slide the ball past Nikola Vasilj while also coming under pressure from a Bosnia defender.

Just five minutes after the break, Szoboszlai wrapped up Hungary’s victory, converting from the penalty spot after Nagy had been fouled by Nail Omerovic. The brace will come as a welcome sign for Slot and Liverpool fans ahead of Sunday’s return to Premier League action against Chelsea.

Opinion has been somewhat split among supporters on Szoboszlai this season. The former RB Leipzig star has scored just one goal so far for the Reds, despite operating as the No.10 in Slot’s system, while also spurning some golden opportunities, most notably against Wolves.

Slot himself has praised Szoboszlai for his work ethic, although he did send a clear message last month that he needed to up his goal contributions.

“He has been important for us and his pressing has been outstanding,” Slot said.

“Something we have to work on is making him even more involved in scoring goals.

“He scored three last season but for an attacking midfielder at Liverpool, his numbers need to go up. I am confident with the quality he has and the players around him he will score more goals as well.”

Having been benched against Crystal Palace just before the international break, Szoboszlai will be hoping his goals for Hungary will see him earn his place back in the side against Chelsea this weekend, with Liverpool looking to maintain their position at the top of the Premier League.
