DARK DEVIL: Scott McTominay was resilient as he played solidly but Scotland were still eliminated – McTominay delved into 11 ground duels and came out on top five times

Following an incredibly late loss at the hands of Hungary on Sunday night, Manchester United midfielder and his national side, Scotland, tumbled tumbling out of Euro 2024.

With both teams battling to hit the back of the net at the Stuttgart Arena, the game appeared set for a stalemate.

But Kevin Csoboth broke the tie in the hundredth minute of business.

Scotland awarded a corner, then dispatched bodies forward. The set-piece produced a huge body tangle in the Hungarian box. Before the ball landed on Rolland Sallai on the right, who had acres of area to work with, Marco Rossi’s men broke upfield fast.

Sallai deliberately selected his target and found an unmarked Csoboth, who broke the hearts of every Scottish supporter with his assured close range scoring.

Having placed lowest of the group with just one point after three games, the Tartan Army are now out of the field of contention.

McTominay covered all ninety minutes, including extra time. The United midfielder started two dribbles and finished just one while on the pitch.

Managing an individual pass accuracy of 73%, he registered 34 touches of the ball and effectively located his colleagues with 11 of the 15 passes he tried.

Using one long ball and one cross, the 27-year-old searched for his target. He made good connection with the single long ball he pinged.

McTominay entered eleven ground duels and emerged with five times top ranking. Aerially, he had to challenge five Hungary players five times. He only got beaten two times.

The graduate of the Carrington academy recorded two fouls and half as many tackles.

He failed to register a shot, either on-target or off-target, therefore he was uncharacteristically silent in front of goal for Scotland.

Most likely now, McTominay will take a break to be ready for his comeback to United, right in time for the pre-season trip of the team.
