Micky van de Ven set up Tottenham’s first goal away at Manchester United on Sunday, his second athletic assist of the season.
After Marcus Rashford took a hard touch, the Dutch defender jumped and dribbled the ball forward quickly for more than 70 yards. He then crossed the ball for Brennan Johnson to tap it in.
Gary Neville, who used to lead Manchester United, praised the Dutch star after the goal. “Great,” he said live on Sky Sports. “Very good work from Van de Ven.” The centre back made one of the best runs I’ve ever seen.
But a lot of fans on social media said Rashford lost the ball too quickly and didn’t try hard enough to get it back.
One person wrote, “Rashford could have shown commitment right then by fouling or tackling Van de Ven.” But he acts like he’s mad and swings like he’s not happy, so we got punished. He doesn’t have the drive to win and fight for the team. Rashford is good, but don’t use him.
“Typical Marcus Rashford,” said another angry fan. That goal was all his fault. “Terrible touch.”
A third message on X (which used to be Twitter) said, “Marcus Rashford made a huge contribution to Tottenham’s first goal, lol.” It was such a hasty move to take two strong guards.
Rashford had run past Destiny Udogie before he lost the ball to Van de Ven. Van de Ven then went on an amazing run that saw him get past Rashford, Manuel Ugarte, Noussair Mazraoui, and Matthijs de Ligt. His cross just missed Lisandro Martinez.
A fourth fan said that Johnson’s goal was the fault of both Ugarte and Rashford.
They wrote, “Rashford showed no interest at all after he lost it, and Ugarte, the player they signed to win the ball, couldn’t get close to Van de Ven.”
