When Diogo Dalot was on international service with Portugal, he made fun of Cristiano Ronaldo, who used to play for Manchester United with him.
Before the games against Slovakia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the defender took a break to post a funny Instagram story of the Al-Nassr striker glued to his phone.
The 24-year-old put a funny joke about his 38-year-old coworker under the post’s caption: “This new generation is always on the phone.”
Dalot has already said that he admires the Portuguese legend and that his desire to follow in Ronaldo’s path is what drove him to move to Old Trafford in 2018.
He then had a dream match with his hero when Ronaldo signed a two-year deal to come back to Manchester United in 2021.
He was only in Manchester for a little over a year before he was released from prison after his famous confessional interview with Piers Morgan. This made it possible for him to move to Saudi Arabia.
Not long before he left, Dalot supported Ronaldo when things were getting worse between him and new manager Erik ten Hag because Ronaldo wouldn’t come on during United’s 2-0 win over Spurs the previous year.
After the team beat Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League, Dalot told Sky Sports, “We are very happy to have Cristiano.” The coach said, “He scored a goal yesterday. He has been doing this for 20 years, and every time he is on the field and helping us, we are a better team.”
Portugal knows that a win in their most recent international games will ensure their spot in next summer’s EUROs and keep their perfect record in the group.
Roberto Martinez’s team hasn’t given up a goal yet, and they’ve called up 19-year-old defender Joao Neves for the first time.
