People found it funny that England star Harry Maguire was compared to Boris Johnson after he got away with “a rugby tackle” tonight without getting in trouble.
In the 25th minute of the Euro playoff between England and North Macedonia, something strange happened.
With no goals scored, the home team was yelling for a penalty after a Manchester United player tripped Elif Elmas and sent her to the ground.
Right away, the star player for the Three Lions pointed at the judge and said that Elmas had made a big deal out of it. Luckily, the official agreed with him.
Maguire tripped because his studs seemed to get caught in the grass, and fans immediately started to compare him to the former Prime Minister.
Many people said Johnson made the “worst tackle ever” in a famous charity game at the Madejski Stadium in 2006.
When playing for England Legends against Germany, he tripped while attempting to close down Maurizio Gaudino, who used to be on loan from Manchester City and hit him in the genitals.
And people who watched the game tonight were quick to notice the links between that and Maguire’s challenge.
“Maguire is turning into Boris Johnson on the field,” someone wrote on social media.
Someone else said the United star was “brought out his inner Boris.”
One fan wrote, “Boris Maguire is playing well today,” and another said, “Nice to see Maguire learning how to tackle from Boris.”
Someone else watching asked, “How is that not a penalty from Harry Boris Maguire?”
He told BBC 5 Live, “Harry Maguire got away with two mistakes there.” Rob Green used to play goal for England.
“First he loses the ball, and then when he tries to get it back, he’s completely out of control; he just trips and falls on Elmas.”
“He almost looked like he tripped on the field.”
North Macedonia was given a penalty right before the end of the first half, even though they got away with that one.
As Bojan Miovski tried to head the ball, Rico Lewis hit him in the face with a swinging arm, even though he had both eyes on the ball.
After a VAR check, there was a penalty, but Enis Bardhi’s shot was saved by Jordan Pickford. The forward then quickly put the rebound in.
