DAVID DE GEA has finalized his Fiorentina free transfer.
After 14 months away, the former Manchester United goalie is back in action.
Later this afternoon, the 33-year-old signed a one-year contract with Fiorentina that includes the option of a second year.
Since departing United in the summer of last year due to an impasse over a contract extension, De Gea has been without a job.
More than 400 days have passed since his last competitive game, which was in the 2023 FA Cup final loss against Manchester City for the Red Devils.
After making 53 appearances in all competitions and keeping 13 clean sheets, Pietro Terracciano was Fiorentina’s first-choice goalkeeper the previous season.
The 34-year-old’s deal is scheduled to expire in 2025.
De Gea came to United from Atletico Madrid in 2011, and he played 545 games for the team in his twelve years there.
He became the highest goalkeeper appearance maker throughout his tenure at the club and broke Peter Schmeichal’s all-time United record for clean sheets.
During his tenure at Manchester United, the Spaniard won five major trophies: the FA Cup in 2016, the Europa League in 2017, and the Premier League title in 2013.
Additionally, the goalkeeper won a number of individual awards, including the Premier League Golden Glove in 2022–2023 and 2017–18.
In addition, from 2013 to 2016, he was named Manchester United’s Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons.
