Five Notable Observations from Liverpool’s Training Day: Darwin Nunez’s Strapping and the Absence of Two Midfielders ⚽👀

Five items were seen during Liverpool’s open training session on Wednesday before their Europa League matchup at Anfield against Union Saint-Gilloise.

Nunez’s knee issues

During Wednesday’s open training session, it was evident that striker Darwin Nunez had strapping around his right knee. The Uruguayan was conspicuously absent from Klopp’s starting eleven for the Tottenham match.

The Liverpool manager acknowledged that Nunez’s knee issue, which worsened during the international break, prevented him from being included in the starting lineup. It’s unclear how serious the problem is, but the Uruguayan is demonstrating that it isn’t getting in the way of his performance.

Nunez is making a strong case for himself to be a regular starter for the Reds after a challenging first season at Anfield. It will be fascinating to watch how Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay is managed in an effort to prevent more harm to his knee as Brighton & Hove Albion and another round of international matches draw near.

Midfielders missing

The open training session saw two notable absences.

As he continues to heal from hip surgery, Thiago Alcantara was absent. The midfield player had a setback in his recuperation last month and hasn’t played since the 2-1 victory over West Ham United in April. However, assistant manager Pep Ljinders stated that the mending process is “going well” prior to Liverpool’s most recent Carabao Cup third-round victory over Leicester City.

Stefan Bajcetic was a player who returned in the win over LASK. He too experienced a setback, though, and hasn’t been available since making an appearance in the victory over Leicester.

Two red cards involved

With two games remaining before the international break, Klopp must decide between Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota for his starting lineup.

.

Jota will be sitting next to Cody Gakpo on the bench for Sunday’s trip to AMEX Stadium, as the veteran won’t be eligible to play until at least mid-October. The Portuguese will miss one game against Brighton after being sent off for a second bookable offense against Spurs.

Jones, on the other hand, is excited to play Union. It is possible that he may serve a three-game domestic man suspension after being sent off on Saturday.

After missing Premier League games against Brighton, Everton, and Nottingham Forest, the Liverpudlian will need competitive minutes.

The wait for Bobby Clark’s bow in the Europa League continues. The midfielder has been one of the key members of Barry Lewtas’ Under-21s side after enjoying pre-season with the first team. But he was absent from the open training session.

His former youth team-mates Jarell Quansah and Ben Doak have enjoyed playing time in the Europa League and Carabao Cup already this season and both were involved in Wednesday’s session, along with Luke Chambers, who was wearing a training top numbered 24 – as opposed to his squad number 44.

Doak follows Salah

Doak will be hoping for another start after playing the first hour against LASK.

During the open training session, the young Scot was behind Mohamed Salah as they were put through their paces in the warm-up. While the 18-year-old has some way to go to reach the standard of the Egyptian, there isn’t many better examples to follow.
