Rafael Nadal is trying to win his sixth Madrid Open title. Zinedine Zidane, Vinicius Jr., and King Felipe VI of Spain all watched his second-round match against Alex De Minaur.
Nadal beat Alex De Minaur, the 11th ranked player in the world, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 in the second round of the 2024 Madrid Open on Saturday. The two players had already played each other ten days before, with De Minaur beating the 37-year-old in the second round of the Barcelona Open.
Tennis TV shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) of King Felipe VI of Spain getting out of a car and greeting the organizers of the Madrid Open before walking into the stadium while the match was still going on.
Another video shared on X by ATP Tour showed football stars Vinicius Jr. and Zinedine Zidane, both of France and Real Madrid. They were seen watching from the stands.
When Nadal talked to Sky Sports after the match, he said he was glad he could play against a player like Alex de Minaur. The Spanish player had surgery in 2023 and has missed a few events this season because of injuries. He was also confident in his fitness and said he would take things one step at a time.
“I’m thrilled to be competing with a player like Alex de Minaur. Tennis hasn’t been the problem; it’s been more about my body.” I will see how far I can go if I can play tennis. “Let’s see how I get better step by step,” he said.
