Even though he made two mistakes that led to goals, Real Madrid custodian Andriy Lunin owns up to them. Ukraine lost to Romania to start Euro 2024.
WHAT CAME ABOUT?
Lunin held his hands up after the shocking 3-0 loss to a team ranked 24 places lower in the world by FIFA. He then answered questions from press in the mixed zone about the game.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Lunin, who was great for Real Madrid during the regular season, made a mistake when he tried to clear the ball, and it went straight to Dennis Man, who then found Nicolae Stanciu to score the first goal. Then, after halftime, he should have done a lot better to stop Razvan Marin’s second goal for Romania. The ball got away from him, even though he looked like he had done enough to stop it.
WHAT LUNIN SAID
After the game, Lunin told the Spanish radio station COPE, “I’m sorry to my teammates; my mistake made the game more difficult.” I’m sorry, and I hope you do well in the next game.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR UKRAINE AND LUNIN?
The s/h/o/c/k win by Slovakia over Belgium made Ukraine’s loss even worse. This means that the two teams they were supposed to get points against both started the game with wins. Slovakia comes next on Friday, and Belgium comes after that on June 26. It doesn’t look like three points will be enough to get through for this group.
