Reports say that David de Gea has agreed to join Fiorentina. The former Manchester United custodian is now getting ready to play professional football again.
The player’s contract at Old Trafford ended in June of last year, and he has been patiently waiting for offers ever since. He has been on the football cold front for over a year.
While De Gea was in talks with teams in Saudi Arabia and other European countries about joining a new team, he stayed in Manchester and did private workouts to stay fit.
But it looks like the wait is over now that De Gea has agreed to terms with Fiorentina, just over a week before the new season starts, according to Fabrizio Romano.
De Gea was in talks with Genoa, another team in the top flight of Italy, but the deal fell through because of the goalkeeper’s price demands, which made the club look for other options.
This player won the Premier League once and played 545 times for United over 12 years. He became the club’s highest earner when he got a £375,000-per-week deal.
His wage demands, which are thought to be around £5 million a season, were a problem for clubs that wanted to hire him, but he has now finally decided to play football again with Fiorentina.
De Gea has signed a one-year deal with the team that won the Europa Conference League last season.
According to reports, the deal will include an option for an extra season that could be used if he does well.
The 33-year-old will now go to Italy to get checked out by a doctor before starting preseason duty with an Italian top-flight team.
Last season, Fiorentina mostly used goalie Pietro Terracciano, who is 34 years old. Tommaso Martinelli, who is 18 years old, also played some games.
De Gea’s skill would make Raffaele Palladino’s team the best in the world in goal.
If United doesn’t make it out of the Europa League, De Gea might still play against his old team in the Conference League.
It’s also possible that they will play a well-known team like Chelsea, who has joined Fiorentina in the third-tier European club tournament.
After such a long break, De Gea will probably need some time to get back to match shape before Fiorentina’s first league game on August 17 against Parma.
