Since becoming the club’s new permanent manager almost 18 months ago, Erik ten Hag has made the Dutch international his top transfer goal. After a long summer of transfer sagas, United finally agreed to pay Barcelona around £56 million for De Jong, but they still had to agree on personal terms. The deal never went through because De Jong stayed at Barcelona and United ended up signing Casemiro and Christian Eriksen instead. Last season, De Jong played 43 times for Barcelona in all events. So far this season, he has been a mainstay under Xavi Hernandez.

Sport, on the other hand, says that the 26-year-old was upset with how Barcelona tried to sell him, which hurt his relationship with the club’s board. It is now thought that De Jong has “calmed down” and that the player and club are working to fix their relationship. Barcelona is also trying to sign De Jong to a new long-term deal. He started six of Barcelona’s first seven games before hurting his ankle. De Jong’s deal with Barcelona ends in 2026, but the club wants him to work for less money for two years.

De Jong isn't completely proud: "My best match in Barça is for arriving"

Even though Barcelona thinks De Jong is one of the best midfielders in the world, no one knows if he will agree to that deal. Since his big-money move from Ajax to Barcelona in 2019, he has played 190 games for the Catalan team and won the Copa del Rey and La Liga. In the past year, Xavi has grown to like De Jong, and the Barcelona manager said he was surprised by how much abuse he has gotten since he got back into the team. He said earlier this month, “A football player who is a 10 is an eight.”

“A player with an 8 is a 6.” This is the reason why it’s the hardest club in the world for prospects to join. Frenkie is the best in the world. He is also when he works out. Which is why some people are shocked. When they see him train, they wonder why everyone is so upset about him.
