It is now thought that the FA is looking at possible replacements for Southgate.

Lee Carsley is the clear favourite to become the next boss of England’s Under-21 team.

He is likely to be in charge of the Three Lions when they play in the next Nations League season next month.

In the same way that FA officials really like Eddie Howe as Newcastle’s manager, they think that Carsley will be the best person to take over for the next game against the Republic of Ireland.

It took Southgate eight years to lead England through 102 games.

led England to two European Championship titles, a World Cup quarterfinal, and a World Cup semi-final during that time.
