On the morning of August 15, Real Madrid defeated Atalanta 2-0 to win the 2024 European Super Cup for the 6th time in history.

Contrary to the Spanish media’s predictions of keeping the same starting lineup in the Champions League final, coach Carlo Ancelotti let Kylian Mbappe start from the start. Alongside him were the Brazilian duo, Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo.

Real Madrid attacked immediately after the opening whistle but were met with a solid Atalanta defense. It was not until the 34th minute that Real Madrid fans witnessed a neat combination. Vinicius received the ball in the middle, before passing to Jude Bellingham who ran down to face the goalkeeper. Juan Musso rushed out in time to deny the English star’s shot.

In the 45th minute, coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed his regret when he saw Rodrygo hit the crossbar after Vinicius Jr.’s through ball tore through Atalanta’s defense. Apart from the two passes that created opportunities, Vinicius had no chance to finish. He also got angry and received a yellow card when the opposing defender continuously followed him.

In the second half, Real Madrid suddenly accelerated and only needed two successful pressing situations to score 2 goals. In the 59th minute, Bellingham successfully contested to open up an attack for “Los Blancos”. Vinicius broke through on the left wing and crossed just enough for Federico Valverde to tap in from close range, putting Real ahead. 9 minutes later, Atalanta lost the ball again in their own half. Bellingham received the ball and passed it back just enough for Kylian Mbappe to finish accurately into the top corner, raising the score to 2-0 for the La Liga representative.

Two consecutive goals defeated Atalanta’s fighting spirit. The Serie A club attacked in vain and could not create any truly dangerous situations towards Real’s goal, despite coach Gasperini making many personnel adjustments.

The midfield’s ability to hold the ball and the defenders’ efforts helped Real keep a clean sheet. All Atalanta could do was Pasalic’s header, forcing Courtois to save in the 47th minute.

In addition to scoring goals, Mbappe also won the hearts of Real Madrid fans when he continuously dropped deep to support the defense. In the 83rd minute, when Mbappe was taken off, the PGE Narodowy stadium’s stands erupted in applause.

The French star ended the match day with impressive statistics such as 43 touches, 3 shots, 86% passing accuracy, and 2 successful dribbles.

The 2024 UEFA Super Cup ended with a 2-0 victory for Real Madrid. “Los Blancos” made history as the club that won the most Super Cups (6 times), breaking the record of Barcelona (5 times). Meanwhile, Mbappe won the first continental title in his club career.
