A week ago, Nike launched the Nike Phantom GT Scorpion inspired by “The Secret Tournament” commercial from 2002. On sale since November 2, it has also appeared on the feet of several players.
Just looking at the scorpion adorning this Nike Phantom GT is enough to take you back 18 years.
We’re in 2002, You’re using your home computer running a version of Windows whose name everyone has forgotten these days, and you’re watching for the seventh time in a row this Nike commercial in which the best players Planet competes in a cage with technical moves, each crazier than the last. Back then they knew how to do advertising! Between this and all “Joga Bonito” will quickly follow.
But back to 2020, the Nike Phantom GT launched in tribute to this legendary advertisement was seen on the feet of four talented young players equipped with comma branding. Mason Mountain, Phil Foden, Rodrygo Goes, and Mason Greenwood. All were born after 1998, so it’s unlikely they knew what “The Secret Touring” was before the couple debuted. But seeing them with this gem on their feet made us ask ourselves the following question. What if Nike was preparing to host the second edition of its fictional tournament?
Imagine what the second edition will look like in 2020. This is what NSS. mag did a few months ago by switching eight teams of three players at the time, with current players.
For our part, we let ourselves dream that teams would be built around bunkers. The Phantom team will therefore consist of Mount, Foden, Greenwood, and Rodrygo. But for this dream to come true, we will have to see the Nike Tiempo Legend 8 and the Nike Mercurial Vapor Scorpion version. And by the way, Nike is also thinking about this project. At least we had the match ball.
