The Liverpool pair each captained their country in the Group A game in Stuttgart, which was settled by a Kevin Csoboth goal 10 minutes into added time.
During a goalless first half, Hungary came closest to breаking the deadlock when Szoboszlai’s disguised, dinked free-kιck was headed against the crossbar by Willi Orban.
A collision that resulted in Hungary’s Barnabas Varga being stretchered off and sent to the hospital overshadowed the second period, which seemed to be going by without any points being recorded as well.
A minute into extra time, Szoboszlai’s attempt from within the area was saved, only moments before teammate Csoboth smacked the post.
Scotland’s Grant Hanley was stopped on the opposite end, but Csoboth won the match in the final minute of play after Szoboszlai launched a counterattack.
The result means Hungary finish third in the group and must wait to see if their total of three points is enough to qualify for the last 16, while Scotland are eliminated.
