GREAT HONOR: Virgil van Dijk Crowned Standard Chartered Player of the Month for February

The Standard Chartered Men’s Player of the Month for February goes to Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool.

The skipper, who has been in outstanding form and has helped the Reds win five games during that time, including the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea, is claiming the prize for the first time in the 2023–24 campaign.

Supporters on Liverpoolfc.com voted for Van Dijk above colleagues Caoimhin Kelleher and Conor Bradley, who came in second and third, respectively.

“I’m proud, of course, but the first feeling I’m getting is that obviously it’s a massive credit to all the boys that have stepped up for us to get the results,” the No. 4 said to Liverpoolfc.com after accepting the award at the AXA Training Centre on Friday.

“Obviously, I had a hand in that, but the guys really stood up, especially the younger boys, and they deserve a lot of credit for that, especially in light of all the injuries, issues, and challenges we faced.

Proud to be the squad leader. It’s great to win a trophy in any case. It goes without saying that the outcome and our response and tenacity were excellent. The youngsters, the little boys, have my utmost admiration.

“The whole vibe that is at the moment at the AXA [Training Centre] and at Anfield, we just have to keep that going.”

In February, Van Dijk started all six of Liverpool’s games and, in addition to his defensive responsibilities, scored twice in pivotal situations.

The center-half scored the game’s equaliser in the thrilling comeback victory over Luton Town, following victories over Burnley and Brentford.

He then secured his first prize as Reds captain by scoring the game-winning goal at Wembley deep into extra time of the Carabao Cup final.

Van Dijk went on, “I want to repay the team and the club for its importance by giving my all on and off the pitch and by being a reliable part of the group.

“I really enjoy it and, in my opinion, I’ve got the best ‘job’ in the world, and it’s obviously a dream for me to play on the highest level and playing for a club like Liverpool.”

Taking a moment to consider picking up cutlery while wearing the captain’s armband, he concluded, “Hopefully there will be many more.” It was unique in the way that the entire day was spent finding the winner and doing it with the gaffer.

“Having my family and my children present made the day extra wonderful. I will always remember that day since it was just wonderful.

“But it’s a quick turnaround and the focus is on the next game, and that’s what happens at the highest level and something I enjoy as well.”
