While Kylian Mbappe continues to wait for his first La Liga goal for Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti says the fact that he plays as a striker is not limiting him.
Mbappe started in the centre-forward spot as Madrid beat Real Valladolid 3-0 on Sunday. But the Frenchman couldn’t score—he had four shots on goal, but only one hit the target—and was taken off in the 87th minute. Soon after, 18-year-old shooter Endrick, who had been replaced, scored the game’s last goal.
Mbappe scored on his professional debut when Madrid beat Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup. However, he hasn’t scored in La Liga yet; in the first week of the season, they tied 1-1 with Mallorca.
At a press meeting, Ancelotti was asked if the 25-year-old is having trouble scoring because he plays as a striker. The Italian backed him to score, saying, “Mbappé is not penalized at all by playing as a No. 9.” He is a great forward because he is quick, can move well without the ball, and likes to hit open spaces. Like always, he’s going to score today, no matter what spot he plays. He had three or four chances.
He won the World Cup and will be looking to get going in La Liga when Real plays Las Palmas on Thursday. The next three days, they’ll play Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu.
