In the Champions League, Real Madrid defeated Stuttgart 3-1 thanks to a late goal from Endrick.
A complete image of the relationship between the two Real Madrid teammates can be seen in newly released video of Kylian Mbappe’s response to Endrick’s late goal in the Champions League.
Tuesday night, Madrid, the defending champions, defeated Stuttgart 3-1 at the Bernabeu to start their Champions League campaign.
The 25-year-old Mbappe gave Madrid the lead with his fifth goal, and the Bundesliga team’s Deniz Undav equalised.
Seven minutes remained, and Antonio Rudiger gave Madrid their lead back. In the fifth minute of injury time, second-half substitute Endrick completed the victory with a long-range goal.
On his Champions League debut, it was his first goal in the competition and his second goal for the club. At the age of 18 years, 1 month, and 27 days, he became the youngest Champions League scorer in Madrid history.
His decision to shoot from outside the box with Mbappe and Vinicius Jr arguably better placed was a topic of discussion after the match, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois admitting they would have “killed’ the Brazilian if it hadn’t gone in.
The Belgian said that “they [Vinicius and Mbappe] would have killed him if he had missed.”
“But he has a really strong shot if he feels confident enough to take a shot. When he scores, nobody speaks! He’s a really good-looking boy. It reveals his character.”
Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti also backed Endrick, claiming it showed the supreme confidence of the former Palmeiras wonderkid – who joined Madrid in the summer in a transfer which could rise to £60m including add-ons.
“He’s got balls! “Endrick showed bravery,” the Italian remarked.
It was the game’s final move. He was positive he would score. He chose the trickiest solution, but it worked out nicely. He has proven himself to be brave in every way during the past two days.”
The France international wasn’t as upset with his younger teammate as some fans on social media had claimed at the moment, as previously unreleased video now shows Mbappe’s instant response to Endrick’s shot.
In the video, Mbappe shouts out for the ball at first and doesn’t get it, but after witnessing Endrick score from a distance, he raises his hands.
With a shrug, he makes a face that suggests he’s saying “fair enough.”
Then, Mbappe gives the Brazilian a quick smile before approaching him to join in the celebration, implying that there are no deeper issues between them.
After the game, Endrick discussed the incident with reporters, stating, “I knew I had Kylian and Vini, but at that moment the best option was to shoot.”
In the face of intense competition for spots in the starting lineup, Ancelotti will be hopeful that his all-star attacking group can keep performing well.
They play Alaves on Tuesday night and Espanyol on Saturday before hosting rivals Atletico Madrid on September 29.
