Chelsea fans gave a Manchester United player a hero’s welcome that made him cry.
Tonight, Erik ten Hag’s team is in Turkey to continue their Europa League quest.
The Dutchman is still trying to keep his job even though the new season is off to a bad start.
Andre Onana has been chosen by Ten Hag to be in goal for the fight in Turkey.
But during the warm-ups, it was Altay Bayindir, United’s backup goalkeeper, who felt the love from the home crowd.
The goalkeeper played for Fenerbahce for four years before moving to the Premier League in 2023.
At United, Bayindir has had a hard time making it into the first team. For the past 16 months, he has been Onana’s backup.
During his time in Turkey, the 26-year-old was a fan favorite. Fenerbahce fans were eager to greet him before each game.
Away players often find it hard to get to the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium because it is generally hostile.
But when an emotional Bayindir walked out into familiar ground and blew kisses to the crowd, the ultras gave him a big round of applause.
As he praised the people, a child jumped over the billboards and ran out onto the field to give him a hug.
Mario Branco, the director of football at Fenerbahce, also gave the goalkeeper a bunch of flowers to celebrate his return.
There was a 1-1 draw in Turkey, so the teams tied in terms of points.
Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho got sent off in a rough game, not long after being stunned by an Onana double save.
It was in July 2019 that Bayindir moved from Ankaragucu to Fenerbahce.
He took the No. 1 shirt right away and played over 100 times for the club over the next four seasons.
He helped Fenerbahce win the Turkish Cup in 2023, before moving to Old Trafford for £4.3 million on the last day of the transfer window.
Bayindir signed a deal with the Theatre of Dreams for four years.
He played his first game for United in January, when they beat Newport County 4–2.
