No goal-line technology was used in LaLiga’s El Clasico match between Barcelona and Real Madrid on Sunday, which got them in trouble. President Javier Tebas has responded.
On the way to the Bernabeu, the score was 1-1 when Lamine Yamal thought he had given Barcelona the lead with a flick from a corner.
It looked like his shot went past goalie Andriy Lunin, but Lunin was able to block it.
The ref, however, waved play on, and the VAR couldn’t say for sure if it had crossed the line.
Now, leagues like the Premier League have technology that can handle these kinds of situations in seconds. If there is a goal, officials get a signal on their watch that tells them so.
But this kind of technology isn’t used in Spain’s top league because, according to El Larguero, La Liga head Javier Tebas doesn’t want to pay the “£2.6 million” it costs.
Fans couldn’t believe Yamal’s shot wasn’t counted as a goal, but Tebas quickly said that his league didn’t have enough technology.
The head of La Liga wrote a bunch of posts about times when goal-line technology went wrong.
Tebas replied to the criticism by writing “no comment” next to the pictures.
It was a bad time for Barcelona because they lost the game. After all, Jude Bellingham scored another late goal.
