Robert Lewandowski, a forward for Barcelona, was the clear leader as the Blaugrana beat Valencia on Monday night.
A short time ago, Xavi’s men marked their return to battle.
Girona knocked Barcelona out of second place in La Liga over the weekend, so Barcelona welcomed Valencia to Catalunya with the goal of getting back to winning ways.
After everything was said and done, the evening’s hosts were able to secure a much-needed three points.
Fermín López scored the first goal, but Hugo Duro and Pepelu scored to level the score. This turned the match on its head, and Lewandowski came through when his team needed him the most.
First, early in the second half, the Pole scored by nodding home İlkay Gündoğan’s whipped corner from the left, tying the game again.
After the break, Lewandowski scored his second goal from close range in the last ten minutes.
Still, it’s safe to say that the 35-year-old saved the best for last…
The home team was given a free kick just outside of Valencia’s penalty area. “Lewa” took it and scored his third goal, a beautiful right-footed shot that went into the top corner.
Not only did his most recent goal help Barcelona win, but it was also important for Lewandowski in the Pichichi race.
Before, it didn’t look like the former Bayern Munich player would be able to keep his title as La Liga’s top scorer. But with five games to go, he is now only three goals behind winner Artem Dovbyk (19).
