Liverpool needs to understand that Mohamed Salah transfer rumors won’t go away anytime soon. It seems like Saudi Arabia will continue to make efforts to bring Salah into their ambitious and quickly expanding league.
This summer, Liverpool could have been able to prevent offers for their Egyptian superstar from rival teams. Salah can’t maintain this rate indefinitely though. Some of the absurd transfer sums being proposed and authorized by Saudi teams may finally make Liverpool’s decision to pass on the money impossible.
Particularly if the player’s contract just has two years left on it and he isn’t getting any younger. Salah, who will turn 32 next summer, is clearly preparing for the end of his professional career. It is obvious how difficult it will be to find a replacement. The squad might not necessarily need to locate a “like for like” successor, though. As it did with Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool might strengthen numerous positions throughout the squad rather than seeking a straight replacement for its talisman. One might make the case that Liverpool would be better off signing a more ‘project’ right winger and using the money left over to strengthen their defense and perhaps sign another midfielder.
Bryan Mbeumo is someone who could help with this rehabilitation in Liverpool’s eyes. Although the winger for Brentford is only 24 years old and has had a wonderful start to the season, he is not quite at Salah’s level yet.
With four goals through four games, he is second in the Premier League only to Erling Haaland after having assisted on 17 goals previous season.Mbeumo and Salah are both right wingers who tend to cut inside, which makes them comparable to each other. He could play both up front and in the attacking midfield, giving Jürgen Klopp some tactical flexibility.
His current deal with Brentford, which starts next summer as he reaches a crucial phase in his career, has two years left on it. There is a window of time where a trade would be advantageous to both the team and the player.
With two years left on his contract, Brentford might still be able to receive a reasonable price for him, but Liverpool might be able to get him for less money than other targets whose deals don’t expire until 2027 or 2028.
Mbeumo is an excellent addition for Liverpool and is set up for another successful season in the Premier League, but he won’t break the bank, which makes him a tempting decision.
He can help Liverpool save money so they can bolster other areas of their team and fill the vacuum left at Anfield by Salah’s absence.
