Lisandri Martinez was very lucky not to get a red card for really rough play on Cole Palmer.
The Chelsea player was hit high on the left knee by the Manchester United defender’s studs.
Referee Rob Jones gave the player a yellow card for a careless charge, but VAR Michael Salisbury should have changed the color of the card to red.
Martinez knew that stopping the attack at all costs put Palmer in danger and did it anyway.
In extra time, after the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, the challenge took place.
During his interview after the game, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca argued that it was a clear case of red card.
He stated: “I think there is not intention to take the ball and the foul is quite dangerous.”
He then said in his press conference, “They show me before the press conference. I think it’s pretty clear for all of us.”
“The referee was there to make a choice, but he made a different one.”
“For me, when there is no intention to go for the ball and just the player, is a red.”
Former Manchester United player Gary Neville thought that Martinez was lucky not to be fired.
The ex-England right back said on the commentary: “I think you’re asking for a red card when you go that high.” He’s lucky, in my opinion.I think it’s a red when you get down to your knees and the ball is gone.
