With a victory, Liverpool—who take on Toulouse in France on November 9 in the Europa League—would guarantee their advancement to the next round. The top spot would be certain if second-place Union SG, a Belgian team that is partially owned by Brighton chairman Tony Bloom, also dropped points.

Liverpool knew going into the game that a victory would put them within striking distance of a spot in the Europa League knockout stages. However, they faced an ambitious Toulouse team, whose owners, RedBird Capital, are also the club’s minority shareholders.

Although they had beaten Union SG and LASK Linz to top the group in their previous two games, Jurgen Klopp’s team may have started the game too casually. It was difficult to connect anything significant until Jota offered a flash of unique insight.
