Erling Haaland’s opening goal at the Etihad Stadium was caused by the goalkeeper’s mistakes, but the Reds’ right-back came back with a late equalizer to earn a point.

Despite their impressive start to the season, some have questioned Liverpool’s title chances. However, on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp’s team showed grit as they overcame a 1-0 deficit to secure a 1-1 draw at Manchester City, halting the Premier League leaders’ 23-game home winning streak.

The Reds got out to a fast start, and Ederson had to make a good save to keep Darwin Nunez from scoring with a header. However, Alisson Becker was having trouble controlling the ball at his feet, which gave Phil Foden and Erling Haaland opportunity.

Alisson may have felt he should have saved the shot as well, but it was yet another mistake from the goalie that proved costly for City’s goal. Nathan Ake took advantage of his shoddy clearing and fed Haaland to finish into the bottom corner.

City believed they had made it 2-0 midway through the second half, but Ruben Dias saw his tap-in disallowed for a foul on Alisson by Manuel Akanji. And Liverpool took advantage of their lucky break, as Alexander-Arnold arrowed a shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner to silence the home crowd and rescue a point.

Goalkeeper & Defence

Alisson Becker (2/10):

Difficult to think of a worse performance from the Brazil goalkeeper in a Liverpool shirt. Was twice almost punished for being too casual on the ball before his poor clearance led directly to Haaland’s opener. Alisson might even feel he should have saved that one, and was ultimately lucky to get away with dropping the cross that led to Dias’ disallowed strike.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (7/10):

Some of his passing was outrageous, but fears over his defensive capabilities played out as City continually targeted him. Rather than Doku, it was the England full-back’s failure to challenge Ake that led to Haaland’s goal. He made amends, however, with a pinpoint finish for the equaliser.

Joel Matip (7/10):

Made some crucial clearances inside his own penalty area and helped relieve pressure with his ability on the ball. One of the Reds’ better performers on the day, as was summed up by his stoppage-time block from Bernardo.

Virgil van Dijk (6/10):

Solid enough, though may feel he should have gone with Haaland’s run for the opener.

Kostas Tsimikas (6/10):

Rarely tested, though Foden did get a little joy against him. Set-piece delivery caused some problems for City.

Midfield

Alexis Mac Allister (6/10):

Strong at the heart of the Liverpool midfield and ensured Alvarez had a quiet afternoon. Lacked incisiveness in his passing to spark attacks for the visitors.

Dominik Szoboszlai (5/10):

Worked had but one of his quieter displays since arriving at Anfield over the summer. Couldn’t create anything of note and was substituted with 20 minutes left to play.

Curtis Jones (3/10):

Gave the ball away on far too many occasions as City’s midfield looked to swarm him and force him into mistakes. Replaced by Gravenberch early in the second half.

Attack

Mohamed Salah (5/10):

Unable to get into the game as much as he or his manager would have liked. Never really got a clear sight of goal as the Reds struggled to create many chances of note, but did claim the assist for Alexander-Arnold’s goal.

Darwin Nunez (4/10):

Most of what Liverpool created fell to Nunez in the box, but lacked the cutting edge to put it away. Denied a headed goal by Ederson, but his game was defined by poor decision-making and a lack of composure in the final third.

Diogo Jota (4/10):

Barely involved as much of Liverpool’s attacks came down the right-hand side. Limped off with an injury early in the second half.

Subs & Manager

Luis Diaz (6/10):

Played a key role in Liverpool’s equaliser as he drove up the left-hand side as a replacement for Jota.

Ryan Gravenberch (6/10):

Some good defensive interventions from the Netherlands international after coming on for Jones.

Cody Gakpo (6/10):

Added more physicality to the Liverpool forward line after replacing Szoboszlai.

Wataru Endo (N/A):

One for the final 10 minutes.

Harvey Elliott (N/A):

Not on long enough to make an impact.

Jurgen Klopp (7/10):

Will likely be happy enough with a point. Individual errors cost his team rather than anything system-related, and made good substitutions in the second half.
