FC Twente held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at home on Wednesday to start their Europa League quest in a way that wasn’t good.
Before the game, Erik ten Hag talked about how much he loved the Dutch team, and it looked like his players felt the same way, since they didn’t attack them after getting the first goal.
After Christian Eriksen scored, the players seemed happy to just keep the ball and pass it around slowly. In the end, that cost them as the other team scored to tie the game in the second half.
Ten Hag’s changes stopped United’s attack in its tracks, and they didn’t do much else after that. As a result, the Red Devils have only won three of their eight games this season.
Bruno’s problems don’t end
One big reason why they haven’t been able to attack is that Bruno Fernandes has been slow to get going this season. The Portuguese player usually does amazing things, but they haven’t scored yet this season.
On Wednesday, the leader of the team missed a great chance but ended the game by passing the ball 75% of the time. Fernandes is a clever player who sometimes throws the ball away, but he hasn’t found his groove yet.
He took three shots, but only one hit the target. The United fans did not like that he chose to shoot from far away with time running out.
He only dribbled the ball 40% of the time and won only 7% of the 13 duels he entered. He also lost the ball 19 times (all numbers from SofaScore).
They should have been taken off.
The Portuguese player did work hard and made one important pass. Two of his three crosses found a partner, and all four of his long balls found their target.
Helped out with defense too; he won two free kicks, made two clearances, and intercepted the ball. But a lot more is expected from the star player for the club.
The Portugal international should have been taken off, but surprisingly, he was kept on and moved to the right side of the pitch, which didn’t work out.
It might be time for the boss to put Eriksen or Mason Mount in the attacking midfield spot for the next game. Fernandes needs a wake-up call to get his act together.
