Because they won on penalties against Manchester City, Real Madrid made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
After Rodrygo put Madrid ahead in the first half, Kevin De Bruyne tied the game up, which meant that the game went to extra time and then to penalties.
Andriy Lunin stopped shots from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic, and he celebrated all night as Madrid was declared the winner.
How the game went down
Last week, it only took two minutes for the first goal. This time, it took twelve minutes. Rodrygo was set up by Vinicius Junior’s low cross. His first shot was saved by Ederson, but the rebound went right back to him, and the Madrid player scored the second time he tried.
As City tried to get back into the game, Erling Haaland sent a header over the bar. The Norwegian then sent another header against the post. When the ball came back, Bernardo Silva could only hit it wide of the goal.
Jude Bellingham, Vinicius, and Dani Carvajal were all able to get in behind City’s defense when they were hit with long balls. In the second, a good shot was stopped, and Federico Valverde’s volley went high and wide.
Lunin blocked De Bruyne’s powerful long-range shot, and Jack Grealish’s rebound effort hit the side netting as City tried to get back into the game. However, even though City put more pressure on Madrid’s goal, they were unable to score before halftime.
In the beginning of the second half, City brought a lot of fire. Fans were angry that several crosses to the back post were hit too high, but Nacho Fernandez did a good job of scrambling the ball off the line after his touch caught Lunin off guard.
Madrid got back into shape defensively and were happy to give City a lot of the ball, knowing that Pep Guardiola’s team hadn’t yet come up with anything too difficult in the first hour.
With 15 minutes left, De Bruyne finally scored when he smashed a loose ball into the roof of the net after collecting it in the box and beating Lunin.
Soon after, De Bruyne hit a spectacular shot that went over the bar. He then hit another shot over the bar right away when he really should have scored from close range.
It looked like City would win in normal time, but Madrid was still in the game, so it went to extra time.
After the restart, the home team picked up where they left off, but their constant pressure once again didn’t pay off. Antonio Rudiger almost scored an unusual winner, but his shocking effort went high over the bar.
The first goal was scored by Julian Alvarez, and City took the lead when Luka Modric’s shot was saved by Ederson. However, Bellingham tied the game after Silva made a terrible mistake.
It took Lucas Vazquez to score after Lunin made a second save in a row to stop Kovacic. Two goals were scored by Phil Foden and one by Nacho Fernandez. Ederson scored to keep City in the game, but Antonio Rudiger scored to send Real Madrid to the semi-finals.
