Manuel Ugarte has been signed by Manchester United for £50 million from Paris Saint-Germain.
Old Trafford has signed five players in the first summer window under the new INEOS system. The 23-year-old midfielder is the fifth player to join.
United agreed to a deal worth £50.42 million, which included a £42 million starting fee and an extra £8.42 million in bonus payments.
The deal Ugarte signed is for five years, and PSG has built in a 10% sell-on option.
After a crazy wait, the Uruguayan player finally got his medical on Thursday, after the teams finally agreed on the money details.
He is the fifth big name player United has signed this summer, following Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui.
But he is their first addition to the centre because 27-year-old academy graduate Scott McTominay is going to join Napoli for £25 million.
When Ugarte signed his deal, he said, “It’s an amazing feeling to join a club of this size and reputation, which is admired all over the world.”
“The project the football leadership talked to me about is very exciting. Manchester United is an ambitious club, and I’m an ambitious player as well.”
It’s important to me that people are passionate about their teams. I know how amazing United fans are, and I can’t wait to see Old Trafford.”
“I am so determined to do well that I will give up and sacrifice everything for my teammates.”
“Together we will fight to win trophies and reach the level where this club needs to be.”
Ten Hag said he had mixed feelings about losing McTominay, who signed with Naples for a deal that could be worth up to £30 million.
As a graduate of the school, that number is just profit, which helps with the maths to stay within the rules about money.
As of July, the defensive midfielder had agreed to terms with both teams, but they could not agree on a fee.
“It’s a little bit mixed,” Ten Hag said. “I’m very happy for him, but it’s mixed because I wouldn’t want to lose him.”
“He was so important for Manchester United; he is everything Manchester United.”
“He lived here for more than 22 years, but that’s just how things are.”
“Western players are more valuable, which isn’t the right thing to do, but it’s a good deal for everyone.” Scott, Napoli and I are all happy with it.
Ugarte was also sneaked out of a fancy restaurant in Manchester on Wednesday night, with his director Jorge Mendes standing in for him.
During his first season at PSG, Ugarte played in 37 games across all categories for Luis Enrique’s team. He helped them win the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France, and the Trophee des Champions.
Even though Ugarte only started 21 league games, he started all six games in the Champions League group stage.
On the other hand, he didn’t start any of the six games in the knockout stage.
